Modern cars are great. They're usually pretty reliable, quite economical (usually), and they've evolved significantly over the years. That's all well and good, except that it's all far too sophisticated and reliable for us to have any real sense of adventure, so yet again we opted for something a bit older.

Our Land Rover was 46 years old when we set off, and no stranger to the Sahara. We drove the same Land Rover the previous year to Algeria on the Saharan Rally 2009. The difference this time around? We were going in the summer instead of the winter, which was going to put a significant strain on the car, and meant taking additional steps to minimise the risk of overheating.
