About Mercy Corps

Registered Charity No. SC030289  ·  www.mercycorps.org.uk

Mercy Corps exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities. Powered by the belief that a better world is possible, Mercy Corps partners to put bold solutions into action, helping people triumph over adversity and build stronger communities from within.

Why we chose Mercy Corps

The Beijing Rally 2014 was our fifth charity rally. Since the Mongol Rally 2007 we have raised over £5,000 for charitable causes, and for this rally we chose to continue our support for Mercy Corps.

At the time of our rally in the summer of 2014, Syria was entering its third year of civil war. Over 4 million people had been internally displaced and more than 2 million had been forced to flee to neighbouring countries. Mercy Corps was on the ground assisting around 2 million people affected by the crisis, providing shelter and essential supplies, drilling water wells in the Zaatari refugee camp, running programmes for displaced children including playgrounds and psychosocial support, and working to ease tensions between refugee and host communities in Jordan and Lebanon.

The rally

We drove from London to Beijing in Red, our 1964 Land Rover, covering 8,100 miles across 11 countries in 27 days. At the finish, we were met at the Great Wall of China by representatives from Mercy Corps. Thanks to 54 generous supporters, we raised £2,157, surpassing our £1,500 target by 43%.

Thank you
