About Mercy Corps
Registered Charity No. SC030289 · www.mercycorps.org.uk
Mercy Corps exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities. Powered by the belief that a better world is possible, Mercy Corps partners to put bold solutions into action, helping people triumph over adversity and build stronger communities from within.
Why we chose Mercy Corps
The Moroccan Rally 2012 was our fourth charity rally. Having supported Mercy Corps on previous trips, we chose to continue that partnership for this return to the Sahara.
In 2012, Mercy Corps was working in more than 40 countries to help communities recover from conflict, disaster and poverty. Their response to the early stages of the Syrian refugee crisis was scaling up in Jordan and Lebanon, alongside long-running programmes in East Africa following the 2011 food crisis, recovery work in Haiti and Pakistan, and livelihoods support across the Sahel.
The rally
We set off from London on 8 September 2012 in Red, our 1964 Land Rover, driving south through Europe and across to Morocco. Over the following weeks we made our way down to the edge of the Sahara and back, covering desert tracks around Tata, Smara, Tagounite and Merzouga before the long drive home through Europe. Thanks to 37 generous supporters, we raised £1,400, surpassing our £1,000 target by 40%.
Thank you
To everyone who donated and supported the Moroccan Rally 2012: thank you. Every penny went directly to Mercy Corps and their humanitarian work.
